Facebook Inc(NASDAQ:FB) has released major upgrades to its
iPad and iPhone apps on Thursday. People, who have suffered from the
sluggishness of the existing apps, can now breathe a sigh of relief. The new
versions are supposed to be faster.
The apps have identical appearance to their predecessors.
The major difference is that most of their web-based code has been substituted
with the native programming code used for iOS.
The other changes in the new versions are slight but
significant. The code from Facebook’s individual Messenger and Camera apps has
been put into the Facebook app, substituting the older versions of photo and
messaging tools. This has resulted in making these tools appear and act
differently, but posting photos and messaging are much zippier with the new
versions.

Another noteworthy difference is in the news feed. When
people ‘Like’ or ‘Comment’ on any post, they will appear in real-time. This
will eliminate the need to refresh the post to view the latest likes and
comments. The news feed has been further optimized to load faster, as stated by
the product manager of Facebook apps for iOS, Mick Johnson.
The new apps are the outcome of an important reshuffling
that is taking place within Facebook. In latest interviews, it has been stated
by Facebook executives that they have retooled the organization so that every
product squad is working on mobile and that the company sets up weekly training
courses on Apple and Android programming.
Facebook engineers feel that the changes to the apps were
important to deliver the instant satisfaction that users seek when they are
accessing the site on their phones.
Facebook’s head of mobile engineering, Cory Ondrejka said
that users want to access the Facebook app on their phone while standing in a
queue and want it to load real fast. He added that as the web technology gets
better, Facebook would utilize it.
